Analysis of cotton yarn import
1.Imports of cotton yarn

Imports of cotton yarn (Hs code: 5205, the following analysis is all based on this Hs code) decreased by 4.48% m-o-m and 7.72% y-o-y respectively to 177kt in Dec 2017, a relatively high level in the year. The total imports of 2017 reached 1,872kt, up 0.46% compared with 1,863.4kt in 2016.

2.Major origins for imported cotton yarn
Vietnam, India and Pakistan remained major suppliers for imported cotton yarn in Dec, with import volume at 52.5kt, 46.8kt and 31kt respectively and share at 30.59%, 27.25% and 18.15% respectively. Imports from Vietnam decreased while that from India kept increasing in Dec, scraping the market share of Vietnam. Imports from Pakistan showed stable while that from Indonesia inched down to 13kt.


Vietnam, India and Pakistan were the top suppliers for imported cotton yarn in 2017, occupying around 35.03%, 21.36% and 18.24% respectively, followed by Indonesia and Uzbekistan with proportion above 5%, and the next was Taiwan China.


3.Major imported cotton yarn by count
Carded 8-25S/1 was the biggest cotton yarn imported in Dec, 2017, taking up 52.45% of the total, followed by carded 30-47S/1 and combed 30-47S/1 with share at 14.49% and 12.22% respectively. Proportion of other cotton yarn was below 5%.

Import volume of most varieties fell in Dec, yet the fall was limited. The imports of combed cotton yarn, especially that of combed 8-30S decreased after a surge in Nov. Carded 8-25S/1 was the biggest cotton yarn imported in Dec, with volume at 92.9kt, followed by carded 30-47S/1, with volume at 25.6kt. Imports of combed 25-30S/1 in Dec ranked the third to be 21.6kt.



Imports of carded 8-25S/1 decreased by 2.15% to 92.3kt in Dec, of which 81.8% from Vietnam, Pakistan and India. Imports from Vietnam inched down, from Pakistan inched up while from India surged up and fell from Indonesia.



Imports of carded 30-47S/1 decreased 1.15% m-o-m to 25.6kt in Dec 2017, and Vietnam remained the biggest supplier, sharing around 39.12%, followed by India and Uzbekistan, the share of the two fell to 24.03% and rose to 23.67% respectively. Proportion of Indonesia increased. 



Imports of combed 30-47S/1 decreased by 1.7% on the month to 21kt in Dec 2017, and India was the biggest origin, sharing around 57%. Vietnam shared down to 21.95%, followed by Indonesia which shared around 7.1%.  
 
4. Import unit price


As for the average import unit price for major cotton yarns, price of carded cotton yarn was firm on the whole in Dec except carded 30-47S, and the price of combed cotton yarn showed weak on the whole in the month except combed 8-25S. Price of carded cotton yarn below 8S/1 enjoyed quite a big increase while that of conventional varieties showed stable on the whole.

Vietnam, India and Pakistan remained the top suppliers for imported cotton yarn in 2017, occupying around 634kt, 387kt and 330.4kt respectively, followed by Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Taiwan, China and Malaysia, from which the imports were 91kt, 82kt, 56kt and 35kt respectively.

Imports of cotton yarn may remain positive in Jan. And the price of the arrivals may show stable to firm despite of falling cotton price supported by strong domestic buying power, And amid firmed RMB, replenishment of weavers before the Lunar New year as well as supply shortage of some domestic traders, the price of some varieties of imported cotton yarn increases and orders turns better in some areas. In recent days, trading of Pakistani cotton yarn at a high price shows good. It is expected that Feb-Mar shipment Pakistani cotton yarn price and volume may obviously increase. And as Indian cotton may be pressed lower, Indian cotton yarn price may also go lower and fixing deals may become feasible. Sales of Vietnamese and Pakistani cotton yarn shows good yet inventory of Indian cotton yarn may increase.

Analysis of cotton yarn export
1.Cotton yarn exports kept growing in 2017

Cotton yarn (Hs code: 5205, the following analysis is all based on this Hs code) exports increased by 28.79% y-o-y and 2.61% m-o-m respectively to 26.4kt in Dec, and exports totaled 262.2kt in 2017, up 13.86% on the year.

2. Exports of combed 8.2-25S surged
As for export structure, Combed 30.4-46.6S remained the major cotton yarn exported, whose export volume rose 3%, yet proportion fell 3% to 26%. Exports of combed 8.2-25S surged 180.93%, with its proportion rising 11% to 19%, representing the second major cotton yarn exported. This sharp rise was reflected in the soaring exports to Philippine. Exports of low-count yarn decreased, yet that of high-count yarn obviously rose with that of combed cotton yarn above 66S and combed 54.8-66S rising 26.15% and 88.77% respectively.





3.Exports to Southeastern countries saw distinct growth
Exports destinations changed much in 2017. Exports to Hong Kong kept falling by 19.56% with the proportion falling by 12% to 29%, while that to Philippine surged 284.27% and the proportion up 12% to 17%, making the country second largest export destination. Exports to Bangladesh, which showed good in 2016 fell 2.55% on the year, while that to Vietnam and Pakistan hiked 56.42% and 143.26% respectively. On the whole, exports to Southeast Asia obviously rose.




In summary, exports of cotton yarn kept growing 2017 to 262.2kt with growth at around 13.86%. Exports of combed 8.2-25S surged up and high-count one also performed well while that of combed 30.4-46.6S, a major exported variety, changed little. Exports of cotton yarn to Hong Kong kept falling while that to Southeast Asian countries kept expanding. This was because, domestic cotton yarn become more competitive amid expanding spread with foreign yarn. What’s more, lower production cost and improved spinning technologies also made the area more important in the sector in international market. High-count yarn exported to the area from China obviously rose compared with previous years and may keep growing in 2018.
